best dog clippers for poodles

Do you have a Poodle or a Toy Poodle? Then check out my ultimate 2022 guide to find out which are the best dog clippers for Poodles.

A good Poodle clipper should handle the wire coat of this breed, even if it is matted. This requires, among other things, a reliable, powerful rotary motor and excellent sharp blades.

As a self-educated pet expert with years of experience behind me, I spent several days researching ideal products to compile an ultimate list for you.

The best clipper I have chosen is the Andis UltraEdge Super 2-Speed model, which meets the requirements mentioned above to the maximum.

Best Poodle Dog Clippers – Detailed Reviews

Whether you are a professional groomer or trying to trim your dog’s hair at home, you need to get the best clipper possible. Poodle clippers can be handy in many situations, but you need to pay attention to the excellent quality.

I selected the following options with careful research based on various criteria.

1. Andis UltraEdge Super 2-Speed Detachable Blade Clipper – Overall Best

To be honest, Andis Dog clippers are clearly one of my favorites. And I recommend the Ultraedge to anyone with almost any grooming task. This is a high-quality tool with an excellent price/value ratio.

Key features:

  • Blade type: Detachable UltraEdge blade (#10)

  • Colors: Burgundy, Blue, Green, Orange, Purple

  • Cord: Corded (14”)

  • Best for: All coat types and breeds

  • Speed: Two-speed, 3400-4400 SPM

  • Durability rating: 9.4

  • Ease of use: 9.4

  • Price range: $$$

The detachable UltraEdge blade easily cuts through the coat of your Poodle. Plus, because it’s detachable, it’s easy to replace and clean. In my experience, it’s effortless to snap another blade onto the clipper.

Although the UltraEdge blade heats up quickly (since it is made of metal), it cools down just as quickly.

But if you don’t feel like waiting, just replace it. (Additional blades must be purchased separately). But you can also choose to put CeramicEdge blades on it, which are proven to heat up more slowly than steel versions.

Andis Ultraedge offers five very cool colors to choose from. Prices and availability may vary by color. Well, it is definitely positive that you can select the clipper for your Poodle to suit your individual needs. My personal favorite is burgundy.

The two-speed rotary motor stays quiet and stays cool for a long time. This way, the grooming session will not be an unpleasant experience for you or your pup.

Due to the two speed levels, this product is highly versatile. The lower 3400 SPM level is excellent for the more sensitive parts, and the higher 4400 SPM level can remove hair with high efficiency in the rest of the body.

The cord of the clipper is durable and long enough (14 “) to move freely around your dog while grooming.

The product is extremely durable, but it can be a bit bulky for many. Well, I think it’s very easy to get used to it with a bit of practice.

Andis UltraEdge isn’t cheap, but it’s worth every penny.

Pros

  • High-quality detachable blade
  • Wide range of colors
  • Strong 2-speed motor
  • Quiet and cool
  • Heavy-duty cord
  • Durable

Cons

  • Some may find it bulky
  • Pricey (but worth it)
  • Steel blades can heat up (but can cool down soon)
  • You need to purchase additional blades separately

Pet Worshiper Rating: 9.7

2. Andis ProClip 2-Speed Detachable Blade Clipper – Runner Up

The Andis ProClip is a perfect runner-up as it has similar features to the UltraEdge. So if for some reason the overall winner of my list is not available, then this product will also be entirely suitable for you.

Key features:

  • Blade type: Detachable UltraEdge blade (#10)

  • Colors: Burgundy, Black, Green

  • Cord: Corded (14”)

  • Best for: All coat types and breeds

  • Speed: Two-speed, 2700-3400 SPM

  • Durability rating: 9.4

  • Ease of use: 9.4

  • Price range: $$$

The 10-gauge steel detachable blade and powerful rotary motor also make this clipper ideal for quickly cutting through even the toughest matted poodle coat.

Although this product also has two-speed levels, these levels are slightly lower than the UltraEdge (2700-3400 SPM).

This results in somewhat lower performance, but don’t worry. For the single coat of poodles, in my experience, these SPM numbers are also appropriate.

Another less critical drawback is the available colors. For the Andis ProClip, you can choose from three colors, but luckily the coolest burgundy can be found here as well.

The product’s design is very similar to the UltraEdge, so the housing and cord are exactly the same.

If you want more sizes in addition to the #10 blade (why not), you can also buy UltraEdge and CeramicEdge blades separately.

Overall, ProClip is an excellent alternative to UltraEdge. Its performance lags a bit, and the range of colors is smaller. However, the price is a bit more affordable, which for many can be crucial.

Pros

  • High-quality detachable blade
  • 2-speed motor
  • Quiet and cool
  • Heavy-duty cord
  • Durable
  • More affordable than the UltraEdge

Cons

  • Some may find it bulky
  • Lower speed levels than UltraEdge
  • Steel blades can heat up (but can cool down soon)
  • You need to purchase additional blades separately
  • Fewer colors available

Pet Worshiper Rating: 9.3

3. Andis Pulse ZR II Detachable Blade Cordless Clipper – Premium Option

Do you consider yourself a person who strives for the best in every situation? Do you also want top-tier products when grooming your dog? Do you want to feel like you are a professional groomer? Then the Andis Pulse ZR II is the choice for you.

Key features:

  • Blade type: Detachable UltraEdge blade (#10)

  • Colors: Black, Purple Galaxy

  • Cord: Corded and Cordless

  • Best for: All coat types and breeds

  • Speed: Five-speed, 2500-4500 SPM

  • Durability rating: 9.4

  • Ease of use: 9.4

  • Price range: $$$$

The clipper comes with a # 10 CeramicEdge blade that not only cuts perfectly but heats up more slowly than the metal versions. Of course, to achieve a different coat length, you will need to purchase additional blades or guide combs.

There is not too much color in this product. On the other hand, the purple galaxy looks overwhelmingly cool to me. I just didn’t want to take my eyes off it as I took it into my hands.

The design of the clipper is sleek; it feels good to grip. This can be an essential consideration if you’re a person whose hands are getting tired soon.

But these are still not the best features of the Pulse ZR II. This is because this clipper can function as both corded and cordless. The rechargeable battery can guarantee up to three hours of running time at full charge, which is quite impressive among dog clippers.

In addition, the motor is not only powerful but capable of five-speed levels from 2400 to 4500 SPM. This way, you are guaranteed to fine-tune the speed depending on which part of your poodle’s body you are shearing.

Premium features come at a price, literally. This clipper can be said to be expensive, but one thing is sure. You’ll get what you pay for.

Pros

  • Extra-long run time (cordless operation)
  • Cool design
  • Works while plugged-in
  • Reliable detachable CeramicEdge blade
  • Multi-speed motor

Cons

  • Pricey (but worth the cost)

Pet Worshiper Rating: 9.7

4. Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Animal Clipper – Best Budget Option

There’s nothing wrong with having a slightly lower budget. Understandably, you are looking for more affordable products in such cases. However, reliability is also a critical consideration when it comes to dog clippers. And here comes the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Dog Clipper.

Key features:

  • Blade type: One standard blade

  • Colors: Black, Silver

  • Cord: Corded and Cordless

  • Best for: All coat types and breeds

  • Speed: Single speed

  • Durability rating: 8.5

  • Ease of use: 8.8

  • Price range: $

This is a cordless clipper with an impressive run time (120 minutes) that allows you to trim the hair of your poodle anywhere, anytime. Plus, the product also works while plugged in, so you don’t have to rely on battery power.

The clipper comes with a single blade that is minimally adjustable. Additional sizes are available, with the different comb attachments included in the package.

Otherwise, other valuable items are included in the package: scissors, a blade brush, and blade oil.

That is, everything will be given to do the grooming task properly and maintain the clipper and blades. So there is every chance that you will be able to use this product for a long time.

Of course, this clipper is far from perfect. Contrary to the manufacturer’s claim, Wahl Lithium Ion Pro is not always able to handle really matted fur.

Also, it’s very bulky, heavy, and a little loud. But let’s be honest. For so little money, this is a really great value-for-money dog clipper.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Many accessories come in the package
  • Great charge time-run time ratio
  • Suitable for all kinds of grooming tasks

Cons

  • Bulky and heavy
  • Louder than advertised
  • Not the best for really thick fur

Pet Worshiper Rating: 8.5

5. Wahl Bravura Professional Dog Clipper – Best Cordless Option

Cordless grooming tools bring you true freedom, mobility, and versatility. Because you can do grooming anywhere with these clippers, and you don’t have to deal with the cord. Among them, the Wahl Bravura brilliantly stands out with its excellent charging and running time, reliability, and value for money.

Key features:

  • Blade type: 5-in-1 adjustable blade (#9, #10, #15, #30, #40)

  • Colors: Pink, Berry, Gunmetal, Purple, Turquoise

  • Cord: Corded and Cordless

  • Best for: Light and medium grooming, finishing, small and medium breeds

  • Speed: Single speed, 5500 SPM

  • Durability rating: 9.1

  • Ease of use: 9.2

  • Price range: $$$

The Bravura’s color range is stunning. My favorite is gunmetal, but I’m sure everyone will find one that suits their tastes.

The 5-in-1 adjustable blade offers a wide range of coat lengths, and the package also includes attachment combs. Equipped with these accessories, you will be able to cut a wide variety of hairstyles for your Poodle.

The product battery is fully charged in 60 minutes and can last for 90 minutes. This is a pretty good ratio, plus the Wahl Bravura can still be used when plugged in. You see, I said this dog clipper gives you the maximum freedom.

The single-speed rotary engine can 5500 SPM, allowing you to get things done quickly. However, many may miss lower speed levels. You know, these levels would come in handy for cutting off more sensitive points (e.g., abdomen, ears, etc.).

Although the manufacturer advertises this tool is suitable for all coat types, I still recommend one of the top 3 products for really thick matted fur.

Pros

  • Provides versatility, portability, and mobility
  • Reliable, fast, and durable motor
  • Great run time and charge time ratio
  • Vast color range
  • Works while plugged in

Cons

  • The single-speed motor is not suitable for everyone
  • Ideal for thick coats, but better for light grooming

Pet Worshiper Rating: 9.1

6. Oster Golden A5 Two-Speed Animal Grooming Clipper – Best Durable Option

It can be pretty annoying to drop your expensive dog clipper on the ground, and it will break or crack. Or you may want to use your newly acquired grooming tool for many, many years. Either way, the Oster Golden A5 will be the right choice for you.

Key features:

  • Blade type: Detachable CriogenX blade (#10)

  • Colors: Black, Blue

  • Cord: Corded

  • Best for: All coat types and breeds

  • Speed: Two-speed, 2100-2700 SPM

  • Durability rating: 9.6

  • Ease of use: 9.2

  • Price range: $$

There is nothing special about the design of this dog clipper, but its housing is guaranteed to be break-proof. My own experiences and online reviews confirm this.

And the grip of the outer cover is ribbed, which allows you to hold the product in your hand confidently. That is, you are even less likely to smash or ruin it.

The performance of the clipper is excellent. The #10 CriogenX blade is sharp and reliable, and the two-speed rotary motor cuts the dog’s coat with 2100 and 2700 SPM.

This may seem a little slow, but don’t worry. There will be no problem with the performance of the Oster A5; feel free to use your Poodle for grooming when it comes to less matted coats.

Experience has shown that the blade heats up quickly, so sometimes, you may want to take a break, use a cooling spray, or replace the blade.

By the way, blade replacement … Although the product is compatible with all A5 blades; you will need to purchase them all separately.

Pros

  • Incredibly durable
  • Ribbed grip
  • High-quality sharp blade
  • Two-speed motor

Cons

  • Not the best for really thick matted coats
  • The blade can heat up quickly
  • You need to purchase additional blades separately

Pet Worshiper Rating: 9.0

7. Wahl Professional BravMini+ Dog Clipper – Best Lightweight And Quiet Option

Tiny compact dog clippers can be attractive to many. Due to its small slim shape and lightweight design, the Wahl Bravmini is sure to fit in your hand, and you will be able to withstand grooming for hours.

Key features:

  • Blade type: Size #30 detachable blade

  • Colors: Purple

  • Cord: Cordless

  • Best for: Small tasks like finishing, touch-ups, ears, faces, paws, great clipper for small breed dogs

  • Speed: Single speed 5350 SPM

  • Durability rating: 8.7

  • Ease of use: 9.6

  • Price range: $$

The single-speed engine has a speed of 5350 SPM, which is very promising. However, you should know that this clipper has limits.

I only recommend it for regular touch-ups, ears, face, and paws. Plus, if you have a puppy Poodle, you can also consider this product as the puppies have lighter coats.

The blade is size 30, which allows for a really short cut length. You only get one attachment comb for the package, so in the long run, you might want to get more accessories.

Pros

  • Perfectly fits in anyone’s hand
  • Quiet
  • Reliable and fast motor
  • Impressive run time
  • Perfect for regular grooming tasks

Cons

  • Not suitable for thicker coats
  • You need additional combs for different coat lengths

Pet Worshiper Rating: 8.5

What makes poodles’ coats special?

Some factors differentiate poodles from other breeds. First, they lack their undercoat, meaning they are single-coated dogs.

The undercoat is a soft layer close to the skin with excellent thermal insulation properties. The outer layer is very dense and rough.

Second, poodles shed very little. This is why they are also called hypoallergenic. This is only partially true, as virtually none of the breeds are hypoallergenic.

Every dog has some allergens. That little hair the poodles’ drop gets caught in the curls.

Therefore, Poodles need to be brushed regularly. Otherwise, a lot of tangles and mats will appear on their fur.

However, if your poodle’s coat has become unmanageable for some reason, you may want to get a professional heavy-duty dog clipper.

What to look for when choosing the best poodle clipper?

choosing the best poodle clipper

With many high-quality clippers on the market, choosing the most suitable one can be challenging.

Poodles’ coats require special care. Therefore, below you can see the considerations on which I compiled my list of the best clippers for this breed.

Choosing A Reliable Brand

If you choose from the offerings of the best pet grooming brands, you can be sure that your tools will last a long time. After all, a high-quality dog clipper is a serious investment.

The best brands are Andis, Wahl, and Oster. These three companies also provide a warranty on their products in most cases.

Versatility with different blade sizes

A Poodle is typically a breed for which it is not okay to cut the entire coat to one size. You can get several coat lengths with different blade sizes, adjustable blades, or attachment combs.

Wahl cordless clippers feature 5-in-1 adjustable blades for #9, #10, #15, #30 and #40 blade sizes.

Speed

The Poodles coat requires a fast clipper motor that cuts efficiently without jamming and pulling.

Manufacturers specify speed in Strokes Per Minute (SPM). The higher the SPM, the quicker the motor.

Some really high-quality dog clippers have multiple speed levels. Slower levels are ideal for more sensitive points, but I recommend multi-speed clippers for more challenging matted fur.

Corded vs. Cordless

I usually recommend corded dog clippers for heavy coats as these tools provide better performance.

There are also excellent cordless dog clippers, and portability and mobility are considerable advantages in these versions.

However, if you choose the cordless version, you should consider the charging time and running time in addition to the power of the motor. Even better if your clipper can be used while plugged in.

Noise level

An overly loud clipper can completely ruin the grooming experience for both your dog and you. In fact, your dog will suffer much more because he is more sensitive to hearing.

Get a quiet dog clipper if you want something silent for your anxious Poodle.

Many manufacturers are developing their products for this purpose, so if the description states that the clipper you purchased is quiet, that is a good sign.

Various online reviews can also help you, with real customers sharing their experiences.

Durability

Dog clippers can cost a lot of money, so I suggest you look for a product that will stand the test of time. Accidents can happen at any time.

You can accidentally drop your grooming tool on the ground, and if the housing is not shatterproof, a lot of your money can be wasted.

Buy a really rugged version if you’re already investing that much money in a Poodle clipper.

Heat

Dog clippers will definitely heat up during use; this phenomenon is inevitable. However, for different products, this will happen at different rates.

But not only the clipper’s body can warm up, but also the blades. Hot blades can easily cause irritations such as clipper burns

And what can you do about it? Choose tools that the manufacturers claim run cool or heat up more slowly. Online reviews can help you here too.

If you buy a dog clipper with a detachable blade, you can opt for ceramic blades that heat up less than the steel versions.

Design, Grip, Weight

Excellent sleek design and lightweight clippers fit very comfortably in anyone’s hand. This aspect is crucial if you have long grooming sessions or your limbs get tired soon.

Also, observe the grip of the product. Tiny grooves can help keep the clipper from slipping out of your hand and from falling to the ground.

Caring for Poodles is no easy task. These dogs used to be used for hunting, and some haircut styles developed during this time.

Of course, these styles did not serve an aesthetic but a practical purpose in those days.

An example is a pompom on the tail, protecting against various injuries. The bald paws made swimming easier, and the mane on the chest protected the animals from the cold and hypothermia.

The latter came in very handy when the dogs had to bring out prey that fell into the icy water.

Poodles are no longer used for hunting today, but different haircut styles have survived and even expanded.

It is important to note that grooming has many benefits for this breed. This is because removing hair prevents a lot of irritation.

So let’s jump into the details!

There are plenty of poodle haircuts. Most of these require the expertise of a professional groomer.

However, there are styles that even you, the home DIY groomer, can try if you have a well-functioning poodle clipper.

Below is a little guide to the most popular haircuts. I want to draw your attention to the fact that it is worth considering practicality when choosing the right one for your poodle in addition to appearance.

Lamb Cut

It’s not the most straightforward cut, but with some practice and a high-quality clipper, you can quickly master the technique.

On the rear, you have to cut shorter and as you move towards the neck, increase the length. The face should be shaved, and the ears should be left fluffy. You will need several blade sizes as well as guide comb attachments.

The video below can help a lot.

Classic Continental Cut / Lion Cut

While this is the most common poodle cut, you shouldn’t give it a try if you’re a novice groomer. Practice with easier cuts and ask a professional for help in the meantime.

However, after a few months of experience, you can give it a try.

The first step is to shave the back, sides, and legs of your poodle short. Leave the so-called “bracelets” (fur rings) around the ankles and the pom-pom on the tail.

You should cut the hair on your dog’s face short, but it should be longer than the legs or sides. The remaining hair on the top of the head is often called the “crown”.

This cut can be encountered in the show rings.

Summer Cut

This is an effortless starting cutting style as you will simply rid your poodle of accumulated hair everywhere. No complications, no different lengths, just an even coat. This hairstyle can come in handy on hot summer days.

Puppy Cut

Despite its name, this cut style is commonly used on toy- and miniature poodles. All you have to do is shave your dog’s face and feet and trim his tail so that the usual pom-pom stays on it. This is a straightforward beginner cut style.

Teddy Bear Cut

Like the summer cut, the teddy bear cut has to even strive for length. (But you leave more hair on). To do this, you will need a good dog clipper and a suitable blade guide comb.

As I mentioned, there are still plenty of cuts for poodles. These are some that can be quickly done at home. Examples are Retriever, Dutch, Kennel, or Sporting cut.

But there is, for example, the English Saddle Cut or the Modern or European Cut, for which you should seek the help of professionals.

Who cuts your Poodle’s hair: You or a Professional Groomer?

The answer to this question is not simple. As you can see, there are several cuts that almost anyone can quickly learn.

If you are not entirely sure, I suggest that you visit an expert for the first time. Ask him for a simple style, and watch him do things if he can. Learn the movements. It also helps a lot to watch videos.

Keeping a dog is a responsibility, and you also have to be very careful with grooming if you want good for your pup.

Grooming your Poodle

So, have you decided to try grooming your Poodle alone at home? It’s a great idea, and I absolutely support it. By following the steps and tips below, you are guaranteed not to be disappointed in the result.

1. Preparations

As a first step, you need the right grooming equipment. These include:

  • high-quality dog clipper
  • brush (preferably a slicker brush)
  • comb
  • scissors
  • towel
  • gentle dog shampoo
  • conditioner

2. Bathing and brushing

It will be much easier to trim your poodle’s hair if it is clean. After a hearty bath and brush, it will be much easier to use the clipper and scissors. Make sure your dog’s fur is completely dry.

However, it would be best not to use a hairdryer with a warm setting.

How often you have to bathe your poodle is very variable, but overall I would say every 2-3 weeks. You should be aware that lighter hair will show dirt sooner, so dogs like this need to bathe more often.

But the frequency depends on the quality of the shampoo used and the coat’s length.

3. Grooming table, leashes, collars

All dogs should stand still during the grooming procedure to avoid injuries and bad hairstyles. If you plan to clip your dog regularly at home, I recommend purchasing a grooming table, as these products have been developed specifically for this purpose.

But almost any stable but not too large table can be suitable.

There are special collars and leashes for grooming tables. These supplies will further help keep your dog calm.

4. Let your Poodle get used to the noise

If this is your first time, your poodle will probably be scared. This is one of the reasons why you should start regular grooming when your dog is a puppy.

Move slowly and think in steps. Turn on the tool, then turn it off after a short time. Then reward your dog with a few treats. The first trimming should also be very short and don’t forget the ongoing rewards.

5. Grooming your poodle’s face

Some people like to start with the body. I think you better do the most critical part in the beginning, the face. Go from the area under the grass to the eyes first, then from the eyes to the nose.

6. Other body parts

After that, continue with the tail, but at the same time, decide which style you want to see on your dog. As a beginner, you can cut the hair even or try a little more complicated cut styles.

Which Blade sizes should you choose for your Poodle?

Whether buying a dog clipper with a detachable or adjustable blade, you need to be aware of blade size charts. Below you will find blade sizes used for some popular cutting styles.

Kennel Trim:

  • Matted Coat – #7F
  • Face, Feet, and Base of Tail – #10 or #15
  • Body and Legs – #5, #4, #3
  • Top Knot and Tailpiece – Scissors

Lamb Trim:

  • Face, Feet, and Base of Tail – #10 or #15
  • Body – #5, #4, #3
  • Legs – #30 with ¾” or 1″ Comb
  • Top Knot and Tailpiece – Scissors

Summer Trim or Bikini Trim:

  • Face, Feet, and Base of Tail – #10, #15
  • Body and Legs – #7F,  #5F
  • Pom-poms, Top Knot, and Tail Pom – Scissors
  • Stomach – #10

Frequently asked questions

I think I have described in detail everything related to the topic. However, I will answer questions that often arise in pet owners below.

How often should I groom my Poodle?

If you want your poodle to look perfect all the time, you need to do frequent grooming. It can also be said that puppies require more grooming as they don’t have that curly and wiry coat. This makes them more prone to mats and tangles. I suggest doing full grooming on an adult poodle every 2-3 months as a starting point. For puppies, this number is 1 max 2 months.

Can I use human clippers on my poodle?

Human hair is very different from dogs, so grooming tools are also different. That’s why using human clippers on dogs is not recommended.

What should I do if my Poodle’s coat is matted?

First, try to loosen the mats with your fingers or a comb. This method will not be effective in all cases. That’s when the clipper can come. Try making a space between the mat and the poodle’s skin and cut the mats out of the fur with a properly sized blade (preferably 3, 7, or 10 blades).

Final Verdict

As you can see, the fur of Poodles requires special care. However, it is worthwhile to deal with this breed, as there are many haircut styles that you can master to get the most out of your dog.

To do this, my list of the best Poodle clipper was helpful. By far, the best one is the Andis Ultraedge 2-speed clipper, which is guaranteed to handle any coat of your Poodle. Every pet parent can be happy with this grooming tool.
