purina pro plan vs purina one

This is my detailed and updated comparison of Purina Pro Plan vs Purina One dog food lines in 2022. You will be able to find out which is better, and what’s the difference.

The two dog foods mentioned above are Purina’s best-known product lines. No wonder, because there are outstanding quality and affordable products here.

As a pet expert and a proud owner of two shelter dogs, I compared the two brands in as many ways as possible. Since the two types of dog food lines have the same manufacturer, I found a lot of similarities. However, there are significant differences that will help you decide which one is better.

I have found that Purina Pro Plan contains better quality ingredients and is healthier overall than Purina One. Another important factor is that Pro Plan products generally contain more omega-3 fatty acids and prebiotics.

However, Purina One dog food is more affordable than Pro Plan. Overall, I think Purina Pro Plan is a better choice than Purina One.

Let’s get started with the comparison and reviews!

How I Did The Purina One Vs Pro Plan Comparison

I see brand comparisons in many cases in which differences are described based on a few data by selecting random products.

Well, I don’t think that’s satisfactory. We need to compare more products of the two brands for the same purposes and we need to look at as much data as possible.

These recipes need to be purchased and tested, which I think is very important. It is also worth relying on the opinions of other customers and dog owners.

So here is my comparison method:

  • Available products on the market: I searched for and examined all the products of the two brands that may be eligible. It was lengthy process, but that’s the only way to assure my visitors that I am the most trusted source.
  • Formulas with same purposes: I chose foods for comparison that have been developed for dogs with similar dietary needs. These are large breed, medium breed, small breed, puppy, and senior recipes in most cases. But sometimes I also compare weight management and different health condition formulas.
  • Looking at the ingredients: After purchase, I analyzed the selected formulas based on their ingredients. Protein quantity, quality, carbohydrates, omega fatty acids, additives, controversial ingredients, etc. I examined each letter on the packaging!
  • Tables and correlations: I organized the data into tables and went through the rows one by one. I looked at which product contained how much protein and from what sources. Then I did the same with carbs, fats, fiber, etc. I also compared the prices of the products, as I know this is also an essential detail for a dog parent.
  • Recalls: The safety of a product can be nicely demonstrated by recalls. For both brands, I looked at current and past recalls.
  • Real Customer Reviews: There are tons of online reviews of products in the online world today. My own experience is very important during content production. But in many cases, we may realize the shortcomings of a recipe based on other customers’ experiences. I searched for these reviews and compared them to make an honest judgment about the two brands.

If you are curious about the detailed comparison, be sure to read on!

Purina History

Purina is one of the largest pet food companies in the world, currently owned by Nestlé. It is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.

It was founded in 1984 by William H. Danforth, among others. The company was still called Robinson-Danforth Commission Company at the time and was a farm animal feed business.

From 1902, they focused more on pet food production and changed their name to Ralston Purina.

The company’s goal was to create products that are delicious and nutritious for dogs and cats. The brand’s first line using natural ingredients was Purina One.

In 1986, the Purina Pro Plan was introduced, which contained meat as its primary ingredient. This was still a novelty at the time.

Over the years, the popularity of Purina has grown steadily. The Pro Plan and One compared in this article are just two of the brand’s many lines. After Pedigree, Purina is the most popular pet food today.

Purina vs Other Dog Food Brands

Purina is today one of the largest brands in the world in the pet food industry. The quality of the products allows them to compete with other dog food brands. I also have some articles comparing Purina to other brands. Here they are:

More About Purina Pro Plan

If we look at Purina’s products, we can see that Pro Plan is its premium product line.

There are unique and premium quality recipes here, all designed to solve some problems. Examples include sensitivity, allergies, weight management, cognitive support, and so on.

There are recipes for different problems in this line, but also for different life stages, sizes, and breeds. Among the more than 80 formulas, you are sure to find the right one for your dog.

The Pro Plan product line is characterized by impeccable high quality. However, some recipes have questionable ingredients, such as fillers and by-products.

More About Purina One

One was Purina’s first premium product line in 1986. These products also have many natural ingredients, but in most cases, their prices are significantly more affordable than Pro Plan products.

The One line also offers nutrition for special needs, but less than the Pro Plan. The lower price means fewer premium ingredients, but don’t worry. One’s products stand their ground in the pet food industry.

The first ingredients in these recipes are usually real meat or meat meal. However, unfortunately here too, you can find questionable ingredients in many products.

Purina Pro Plan vs Purina One: Which is better?

To properly compare the two Purina lines, I selected similar recipes. These are the large breed, medium breed, small breed, puppy, and senior formulas.

Later, you will also find comparison tables that will make it easy to analyze different products. By the end of my article, I will confidently determine if Purina One or Purina Pro Plan is better.

Every recipe complies with the AAFCO canine nutrition guidelines

So let’s see the detailed comparisons!

Finding the best diet for your dog is not easy. You have to consider several aspects, e.g., activity, breed, age, health condition, etc. If you want to make the best decision possible, check out my comprehensive guide on how to choose the best dog food.

Ingredients Quality

purina pro plan vs purina one

Among the ingredients is both good and less good quality. I will detail these below. None of the recipes reviewed were grain-free, so if your dog is sensitive to grains, these recipes won’t be the right choice.

Anyway, neither Purina One nor Pro Plan has many grain-free options. If your dog has such an eating need, check the other product lines.

The first ingredient in Purina One and Pro Plan products is real meat, most often chicken. This is positive in several ways.

On the one hand, meat is the most crucial ingredient in any dog food, as it provides the basis for a dog’s diet and provides essential amino acids. On the other hand, this meat is delicious, easy to digest, and lean. The chicken is perfect for building and maintaining lean muscle mass.

The second ingredient in both product lines is rice, albeit in a slightly different form. Pro Plan contains rice, which is a complex, wholesome, and healthy grain. The products of Purina One, on the other hand, many times include rice flour, which has a lower nutritional value due to its processing.

The following components are also very similar for both products. Pro Plan and One also contain controversial ingredients such as Soybean Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, and Wheat. All of these can cause adverse reactions in dogs with allergic or sensitive stomachs.

Whole wheat and corn provide a lot of energy, but their nutritional value is low, and they are not ideal for sensitive dogs.

Both recipes include chicken by-product meals. It is a great source of glucosamine, which has a perfect effect on joint health. Nevertheless, many do not consider the by-products to be good because their quality is uncontrollable.

Purina One product contains a caramel color, which is an artificial colorant. All artificial additives are potentially harmful to the digestive system of dogs.

Garlic oil used in the Pro Plan formula can cause anemia in dogs. It was included in this recipe because of support for the immune system.

Purina Pro Plan contains many useful and premium components in addition to the controversial ingredients mentioned above.

Examples are probiotics. These are beneficial microorganisms that aid digestion and absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract.

Both recipes contain fatty acids. These are extremely important for skin and coat health and other bodily processes. Pro Plan also contains fish oil, which is an excellent source of omega-3.

Both products contain adequate amounts of added vitamins and minerals. If you want a robust immune system for your dog, these micronutrients are essential.

Overall, both products discussed here contain both qualitative and somewhat controversial ingredients.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

However, the Purina Pro Plan formula has additional ingredients with useful and healthy nutrients to stand out in this competition.

Nutritional value of the two Lines’ products

Guaranteed analysis of nutrients is the most reliable way to inform us. This should be indicated by all dog food brands on their products. Below you can see the analyzes of the medium breed formulas:

Purina Pro Plan

  • CRUDE PROTEIN 26.0% min
  • CRUDE FAT 16.0% min
  • CRUDE FIBER 3.0% max
  • MOISTURE 12.0% max
  • LINOLEIC ACID 1.4% min
  • CALCIUM 1.1% min
  • PHOSPHORUS 0.9% min
  • SELENIUM 0.35 mg/kg min
  • VITAMIN A 15,000 IU/kg min
  • VITAMIN E 460 IU/kg min
  • ASCORBIC ACID 70 mg/kg min
  • GLUCOSAMINE 400 ppm min
  • OMEGA-6 FATTY ACIDS 1.5% min
  • BACILLUS COAGULANS 600 million CFU/lb min

Purina One

  • CRUDE PROTEIN 26.0% min
  • CRUDE FAT 16.0% min
  • CRUDE FIBER 3.0% max
  • MOISTURE 12.0% max
  • LINOLEIC ACID 1.4% min
  • CALCIUM 1.0% min
  • PHOSPHORUS 0.8% min
  • ZINC 150 mg/kg min
  • SELENIUM 0.35 mg/kg min
  • VITAMIN A 13,000 IU/kg min
  • VITAMIN E 250 IU/kg min
  • GLUCOSAMINE 350 ppm min
  • OMEGA-6 FATTY ACIDS 1.6% min

As you can see, the two recipes have nearly the same nutritional value. Purina Pro Plan contains more glucosamine, vitamins, and minerals. Purina One has a higher omega-6 content. However, because fish oil is one of the Pro Plan ingredients, the fatty acid ratio of that recipe is more balanced.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

Overall, I have to say that Pro Plan is better in terms of Guaranteed Analysis.

Macronutrients Comparison

In this section, I compare in detail the protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber content of similar products from the two brands.

purina pro plan vs purina one

The above recipes meet the nutritional profile of AAFCO for adult dogs to the maximum.

26% is plentiful enough for your dog to get the right amount of amino acids. This is because amino acids are needed to build and maintain muscles, regenerate cells, and other important bodily processes.

However, it is worth examining the amount of protein and the quality, i.e., protein sources. Both products list real chicken as their primary ingredient. This is very positive, as the most useful source of protein for dogs is real meat.

Both products use plant proteins as a soybean meal. These are inexpensive sources that, although they increase the crude protein content, dogs cannot digest them properly. Moreover, in some canines, these types of ingredients can cause sensitivity.

Although the chicken by-product is high in glucosamine and chondroitin, it is not considered a high-quality protein source. The only positive is that these by-products are meals, which means they are present in a moisture-free concentrated form.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

Because Pro Plan contains multiple animal protein sources, it also wins this round.

Fat content

fish oil

Fats are a significant source of energy for dogs. An average dog needs a minimum of 5.5% of this nutrient in its diet.

The two lines reviewed far exceed this with a fat content of 16%. This can be beneficial for many dogs, such as working dogs or sporting dogs and small breeds.

And more fat means more omega fatty acids in many cases. This is good for the health of the skin and coat of dogs.

If your dog is obese, the 16% fat content is probably too much. However, for dogs with average and fit body composition, this diet is appropriate.

Since the two products have the same fat content, it is worth comparing the sources here. The primary source of fat in both recipes is beef fat, which contains many omega-6. Purina One does not include fish oil, so the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is not balanced.

It is worth noting that omega-6 fatty acids are essential in the diet, but excessive intake increases the chances of developing various inflammations. Omega-3, on the other hand, has an anti-inflammatory effect, so this fatty acid also plays a critical role in every dog’s diet.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

Although the two recipes have the same fat content, Purina Pro Plan has a more favorable omega fatty acid profile.

Fiber Content

purina pro plan vs purina one

Although dogs cannot digest fiber, these nutrients are essential for the digestive system’s proper functioning.

Fibers nourish beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract. Their absence causes many problems, such as constipation or anal gland issues.

Both products reviewed have a fiber content of 3%, which is given by different grains. None of the recipes contain added fiber or a high-fiber ingredient.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

Overall, it can be seen that the Purina Pro Plan has clearly won in terms of nutritional value.

Flavors and options

As I mentioned in my article, Purina Pro Plan has many more products and variations. Therefore, it is easier to find the right option for every dog from this line.

Many dogs are picky, and their needs can be quite tricky to meet. Therefore, it is worth examining not only the nutritional value but also the taste.

Flavor options are important because if your dog gets tired of a taste, you can switch to another recipe without making any significant changes to their diet. Of course, keep in mind that the transition must be gradual in all cases.

For both Purina One and Purina Pro Plan, the customer experience is very good. Dogs love the flavors of these products. Pro Plan, on the other hand, has a much more comprehensive range of tastes.

Also, it offers more options in terms of texture. Dry food also contains crispy and soft pieces, and it is fascinating and appealing for dogs.

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

In terms of flavors and options, Purina Pro Plan is better than Purina One.

Cost

Both products absolutely fall into the affordable category. Of course, in many cases, the disadvantage of this is that the quality will be lower.

Both recipes meet AAFCO’s nutritional requirements, but this and cheapness are achieved with inexpensive ingredients.

Wheat, corn, and soy cause sensitivities or allergic reactions in many dogs. If your dog also has a problem with these ingredients, it is better to avoid these products. Be sure to read the list of ingredients on the package.

What is positive about Purina One and Purina Pro Plan, however, is that despite their cheapness, they use real meat as their primary ingredients. Many brands in similar price ranges have corn or other grain as their primary ingredient.

In addition to meat, there are also meat by-products in these recipes. These can also be considered cheap ingredients. Their only advantages are their glucosamine and chondroitin content.

Despite the similarities, Purina One is significantly cheaper than Pro Plan. This is due to the inclusion of other special ingredients in Pro Plan products. Respectively, these foods cater to many more special dietary needs in dogs.

Winner: Purina One

So in terms of price, Purina One is the winner.

Recall history

Whether pet food can be said to be safe is easy to ascertain from a look at current and past recalls. Recalls are initiated by the FDA if there are complaints about contamination, quality, or other issues with a particular food. You can view the full list of current FDA recalls here.

You can see that there is currently no recall in progress for any of these brands.

Purina Pro Plan recalls

  • March 2016 – Inadequate vitamins and minerals

Purina One Recalls

  • July 2011 – Possible salmonella risk
  • August 2013 – Possible salmonella risk

Winner: Purina Pro Plan

As you can see, Purina Pro Plan had fewer recalls in the past. That’s why it wins this round.

Real Customer Reviews

Nowadays, it is effortless to search the internet for customer reviews of a particular product. I always like to look at these because it gives me a complete picture of whether it’s worth buying from a brand. Below, I have brought you some of Purina Pro Plan and Purina One’s positive and negative reviews.

All of them are from Chewy’s website.

Purina Pro Plan Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula

Owners often praise the Pro Plan formula. It has been observed that these recipes help maintain skin and coat health and promote overall health. Due to the special texture, picky dogs especially like them.

Positive

Best food out there

  • My Veterinarian recommended Pro Plan for my 9-year-old Airedale with arthritis. A large consideration was the composition of the food, the fact that it is made in America, and that Purina foods simply don’t get recalled for contamination. In this size bag, the kibble is large – a good 3/4 – 1” across. In the small bags, the kibble is a little bit less than 1/2”. What makes this kibble attractive for the dog is the inclusion of what I call chicken jerky bits. It keeps the kibble interesting for the dog.

Absolutely amazing!

  • Belle has very dry skin, due to being a southern-born puppy, and we struggle with finding good food for her skin and coat. Since being on Purina Pro Plan essential nutrient, she’s gotten so glossy and sleek! She absolutely loves it!!! Our vet recommended us to try this and I’ve got to say I’m not disappointed in the results and neither is Belle!!!

Negative

Consistent

  • Our shelter dog was eating this for 60 days at the shelter. They switched back to Pro from another brand that gave the dogs “issues”. After a very rough start (food-wise) from his birthplace, we had him at the vet yesterday and he is gaining muscle strength, his skin and coat are healthy, plus his digestion is perfect. He loves it dry or with some wet food on it. I don’t like the price…but I love the results.

Purina Pro plan Adult shredded blend Chicken & Rice

  • I have three dogs, small, medium, and large. I have been searching for dry dog food that my pack will eat. I’ve tried everything from the most expensive to the most popular. My dogs love chicken. So knowing that I decided to look for a dried dog food that actually had chicken in it. I tried Purina Pro Plan and I could not believe my eyes were eating it. I have one that can pick out the “real “ chicken, he eats that first. The reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because the dried food has lots of crumbs. You know, the kind of crumbs in the bottom of the bag? Well, there are more crumbs than that in the bag. I can’t even guess why. But they like it!

Purina ONE SmartBlend Chicken & Rice Adult Formula

The majority of customers recommends Purina One products for their affordability and quality.

Positive

Purina One

  • She loves this dog food, right along with the Purina canned food. By the way (CinCin) happens to be Our fur baby’s nickname. She’s a big fur baby girl. 3 yrs old. and she is always excited to receive her Chewy box. I’ve found that Purina One is good for her and she likes it, and it doesn’t break your wallet paying for it.

how good that Purina one blend

  • I love this food my baby girl has been on it since we got here and we have had no problem out of but we was given so kibble and bits and it messed with her stomach and we stop giving her that and she has been back on one blend since and has had no problems

Negative

Good for some, but not all breeds

  • I feed this to both my dogs (6yr old boxer-pit, 2 yr old beagle). They love it. It helps my boxer stay at the weight she needs, but it doesn’t help with my beagle’s overweight problem. That being said, it’s really all about the dog, but maybe not for dogs that have a hard time keeping their weight down. Great packaging, shipped fast, great product for an affordable price.

Dogs not happy with this brand…

  • I believe the problem is out of all control. My dogs love this food but recently (last 2 bags) do not have any real meat bites in the bag. They eat all those first then the hard parts – looking inside the bag you can see there are some little bitty meaty bites but not the usual big chunks of meaty bites.

My final verdict about Purina Pro Plan vs Purina One

Based on my comparative article, I think the difference between the two lines is clear to you as well.

Purina Pro Plan offers a significantly wider selection and is also of better quality than Purina One products. Not to mention that Pro Plan dry foods also contain omega-3 fatty acids and added probiotics. These nutrients can greatly contribute to the overall health of dogs.

So the absolute winner in the matter is the Purina Pro Plan. However, Purina One can also be a great alternative if you have a tighter budget.

One thing is for sure: If you buy a Purina product, the quality is guaranteed. And the Pro Plan formulas also represent the absolutely affordable category in the pet food market.
