Best microchip and RFID tag activated pet feeders

If you are in a hurry and want to know right away:

I chose SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder as the best microchip cat feeder.

If you have a great variety of animals in your household, you are aware of how difficult the issue of feeding is. There will always be a more dominant cat that takes away from the rest, what he or she deserves. The situation is similar if you also have a dog in your household. However, this case even poses health hazards to the dog (I will write about this later in this article). A convenient and modern solution to this problem is the use of selective pet feeders. There are several types of these, my personal favorites are microchip cat feeders. I discuss these mainly in my article.

In this article I reviewed these microchip cat feeders:

Anyway, you might want to read the full article because I’ve put together some helpful tips on the subject.

Everything you should know about selective pet feeders

What is a selective pet feeder? What types are there? What is the purpose of these? In the following, I will answer these questions.

Selective pet feeders

These are pet food dispensers that are specially designed. They only give access to food to certain animals (or pets of a certain size). This trick is to prevent food from getting to other animals.

These feeders can be divided into two main categories. One is electronic microchip/tag-based automatic pet feeders and the other is restricted access feeding stations.

Restricted-access feeding stations

These feeders are simple bowls with a cover that is only accessible to animals with certain sizes. So bigger pets can’t access the contents of the bowl. These feeders are most useful in a situation where there is a big difference between the sizes of your pets. For example, if you have a cat or a big dog who likes to steal your cat’s food.

Electronic microchip / tag-based automatic pet feeders

These feeders are more complicated. They work with digital wireless sensors. With this technology, these feeders can distinguish between who is authorized and who has no access to food. These automatic feeders use the pet’s microchip or special RFID tag for seeing who has permission.

The main difference between using the pet’s microchip or a special RFID tag is distance. A simple microchip doesn’t send any signals. It only reflects the source. In contrast, RFID tags can both transmit and receive signals. That’s why it can be detected from a greater distance.

Why you should use it?

If you still don’t know if you need a device like this, read on. Selective pet feeders can be used in many situations.

  • If you have both a dog and a cat at the same time, you are sure that the dog will prefer to eat your cat’s food. Selective pet feeders help prevent this.
  • It is also good to use these if you have a baby in the house who can already walk. Babies are very curious and touch everything. Your pet’s food will be no exception. This method also keeps flies and insects away. The feeder keeps the food closed until the authorized animal appears.
  • Sometimes your pet needs to follow a special diet that is not cheap. It can be quite annoying when another animal eats the prescribed food which is expensive. Thanks to this feeder, your wallet won’t be hurt because of the greed of your other animals either.
  • If one of your animals is too greedy, you can control the meals with this little machine. You give food to the impatient one when it’s needed, and your other pets will use the microchip feeder.
  • Selective pet feeders can help to manage food conflicts between pets.

From the above, it is clear that it is worth considering the use of these pet feeders. Especially if you have a multi-pet house with many species and sizes of animals.

Additional things to keep in mind

  • Size matters! Before buying a microchip cat feeder, check what animal sizes it supports. Clearly, not all feeders are suitable for cats of all sizes. In general, height and neck size are crucial. You will find this information on the manufacturer’s website or you will be able to ask the seller.
  • If you want to use an RFID tag-based automatic cat feeder, it would require your pet to wear the tag in its collar. While most cats can get used to it, it is possible that your pet will not love this arrangement. If you don’t want to force it, look for a plain microchip or non-electric versions.
  • The tags you use for automatic pet feeders are not always waterproof. Be careful when putting wet food in the feeder. For safety, make sure the tag doesn’t fall into it.
  • These dispensers have functions that keep unauthorized animals away from food. However, it is better to keep the smart feeder away from food stealing pets too.
  • Treat this feeder as if it were a simple feeding bowl. That is, wash, clean all parts regularly. If you use water for this, take out the batteries.
  • Also check the feeder and tag batteries regularly. This will reduce any resulting malfunctions.
  • There is a chance that something is not good after all. Monitor your pet’s size and weight regularly. If you notice that your cat is losing weight, it is possible that the feeder is not working as intended. Make sure the error is corrected as soon as possible.
  • If you have children in addition to pets, they will definitely like this machine. It’s not a good idea to let them play with it. Put the feeder in a not so busy place in the house. Or talk to them that this is not a toy.

How to teach your cat to use the feeder?

Your kitten may need a little support and help in learning to use the feeder.

Put the feeder where you are currently feeding your cat. If he or she doesn’t dare to go there, remove the feeding bowl from the unit and place it to the side. Then gradually put the bowl closer and closer to it until finally, it will be again in the unit.

If your kitten is used to the bowl, you can put the tag in its collar. You can constantly get her used to the sound and movement of the feeder. Give her a reward snack every time the machine starts.

It’s only a matter of time and your cat will happily eat from the vending machine. You too can be happy, because the battles for food between the animals will end.

Why not let your dog eat cat food?

It can cause a lot of problems if your dog devours all of the cat food. I will detail these below.

Health consequences

Perhaps you are not unfamiliar with the fact that the composition of dog food and cat food is completely different. This is because the two species have totally different needs. A healthy dog won’t have any problem with sometimes tasting a little bit of a feline’s food. However, regular consumption of this can also lead to more serious health problems.

Most cat food contains more protein and fat than dog food. This can make it look tastier and fuller for your dog. Dog food tends to contain more carbohydrates. Eating aside in the short term only leads to stomach problems. Don’t let the situation get worse.

Cat food is high in calories due to its high protein and fat content. You can figure out what this leads to. Your dog will gain weight, which is extremely unhealthy. Obesity can be blamed for many diseases. Examples of such diseases are arthritis or diabetes

Your dog could easily be allergic to one of the ingredients in cat food. Or it may contain some artificial material that your puppy’s stomach won’t tolerate. Therefore, it is wiser to give your dog her or him the usual food.

Bad Habits

This is a short point, but more important. If dogs get a taste of cat food, they may no longer ask for their own food. From here it is only a step for them to try to get lunch from your table as well.

Your cat’s health

If your dog always sniffs the prohibited food, your cat may not get enough calories. I hope I don’t have to say how negative this is for your cat.

Other options to keep your dog away from cat food

If you still can’t find a suitable selective pet feeder, or want to be even safer, read on. The following solutions are simple but very effective.

Put it on a table

Cats can easily jump up to high points that dogs cannot approach. For example, on a table. The only thing you should pay attention to is that this table should not be your own kitchen table.

It’s not very hygienic when your cat walks with its dirty paws where you and your family will eat. So provide to your cat another table or another high place where she can eat. Anything appropriate that is easily accessible.

Build your own feeder

Just build a cage or a container in which you can put the cat food. Then you need to create some type of door or entrance that allows your cat to enter. However, this entrance should be small so that your dog cannot enter. If there is a big difference between the size of your cat and your dog, this is a very good method.

Selective pet door

These are like regular dog gates. On the other hand, they have a small door that allows smaller pets, such as cats, to enter. If you use this, you don’t have to trick anymore. You can feel free to feed your cat on the ground, as you are both accustomed to. After feeding, you simply open the door.

Feeding in a separate room

It is practically the simplest solution, yet many forget it. Try feeding your cat in another room. Experiment with where there is a place in the apartment where your cat is comfortable eating. Don’t let your dog in that place especially while your cat eats.

Turning back to microchip cat feeders and my Top 4

If you’ve gotten this far with reading then you’ll probably still want to buy a microchip cat feeder. This is a good decision because it is the easiest and most convenient way to separate different foods. I evaluate four different feeders below.

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder

This is perhaps one of the best-known products in this category. Recognizes your cat’s microchip or tag. So it will only open to registered cats. Then it closes back after eating. What’s really impressive about this feeder is that it can store 32 pets in its memory. You can try many different combinations to experience what is best for you and your cats.

The feeder can also be used to store dry and wet food. The loaded food does not get air, so it stays fresh. Because it closes well, ants don’t get in. Plus, you can put in wet and dry food at the same time. This is because the feeder comes with a split bowl.

It must be washed by hand because the machine is not dishwasher safe. The product has many other features. For example, you can reduce or increase the time it takes for the lid to close after your cat has eaten.

It is a very modern machine and it will take time while you learn its functions. Although a bit pricey, it is well worth the price.

Pros

  • Many features
  • Great design
  • You can use it for both microchip and RFID tags
  • It can store both wet and dry food

Cons

  • Can be a little bit complicated
  • Pricey

Wireless Whiskers AutoDiet Pet Feeder

This is not a microchip feeder it can only be activated with a collar. This automatic feeder can be used with up to 8 pets and comes with 2 collar tags.

This machine also has some useful features. It can measure one by one based on the tags to see how much your pets eat. This way you can easily dose the food according to your cat’s diet. The feeder door closes when a fatter cat, who no longer needs more food, comes there to eat.

The number of possibilities is very many. You can also exclude animals that cannot eat from the feeder. Or maybe you have a cat that likes to eat a lot at once. You can divide this cat’s daily food dose into smaller portions using the machine. This will prevent vomiting.

This dispenser will let you know if your cat eats less than 65% of its allowance. This will prevent malnutrition.

There are also some downsides to this dispenser. The microchip sensor will only detect your cat from a certain point.

Otherwise, the food is not 100% protected. Some smarter cats can break into it if they really want to.

Along with these mistakes, I find the price a bit high.

Pros

  • It solves so many kinds of problems
  • Comes with a power cord

Cons

  • Price
  • Not the best tag sensor
  • It’s not impossible for skillful cats to get in

OurPets Wonder Bowl Selective Pet Feeder

This selective pet feeder also works with a collar tag. However, it is unfortunate that only one tag can be assigned. For this reason, this bowl is a good choice only if you have one cat that you want to feed uniquely. However, it is perfect for this purpose.

What I like about this bowl is that it is made of stainless steel, and it is dishwasher safe. So you can save a lot of time when you clean it.

The feeder can be used for both wet and dry food. But not at the same time. Be sure to clean the bowl regularly.

Sadly, the power cord is sold separately, and you also have to buy the 3 D batteries, if you want to run the product on batteries.

This selective pet feeder doesn’t have too many features, but it’s also not hard to learn to use.

Pros

  • It’s a good product for a single cat with special needs
  • Can be used with dry and wet food
  • The bowl is dishwasher safe
  • Good price

Cons

  • Only one tag
  • Power cord sold separately

Another feeder designed by OurPets. It is similar to Wonder Bowl shown above. However, this feeder comes with an OurPets app with which you can manage and monitor your pets. Your phone will be able to connect to the device via Bluetooth.

The machine will only open to a cat wearing a unique collar tag. The dispenser monitors the pet’s eating habits, behavior, frequency and duration. If something changes in these factors, the app will alert you on your phone.

What is also an improvement over the previous product is that more collar tags can be purchased separately for the product.

This bowl is also made of stainless steel and dishwasher safe. The power adapter is sold separately. The tag sensor could have been done better. It won’t recognize your cat from all angles.

Pros

  • Detailed reports on your pet’s feeding habits
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • The sensor could be improved
  • The adapter is sold separately

My choice

My choice is SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder obviously. It has many useful features and it is not negligible that it can store 32 different pets in its memory. Whether you use a microchip or a collar tag on your cats, it will work with both. Given its many benefits, it is well worth learning how to use it. I’m sure this will be a good investment for your kittens.
